In the beginning...
Last week I taught a class at my church for our Financial Freedom Institute. While my lesson applied directly to becoming financially free and understanding that God is the source of everything we need, it also spoke to me personally on another level. Three points we discussed in class were: God Provides, God Places & God Gives.
When we go back to Genesis, we see that God provided for man before man was even created:
Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. Genesis 1:11
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27
He provided for them before they knew what they needed. Then he strategically placed man in a garden of abundance. The definition of “place”, as a verb, is to “put in a particular position.” God positioned them to receive what he provided.
The position God places us in sometimes may seem foreign; or we may be in a season that we’ve never experienced before and we’re not sure what to do. Just as Adam and Eve were in the same situation, they waited on God to speak.
After God provided and placed (positioned), God gave. However, God didn’t give something material; he gave instruction, parameters and boundaries. Many times we look for God’s hand instead of his instruction. God instructed Adam and Eve to work: they were to maintain what God provided, be good stewards of what he provided, and heed to his instruction (not eat of the tree of life). At the time they did not understand God’s instruction. Later we see that their disobedience would expose them to something that killed their blessing (Genesis 13:24).
A lot of times we don’t understand what God is doing or why he has us in a particular position. We think we deserve something better or that God is keeping something from us. We may not see the provision, but we know that if God provided for Adam and Eve, he will do the same for us. We must listen to his instruction rather than the enemy, who wants to kill steal and destroy (John 10:10).
Through this lesson, God showed me he’s already provided what I need. He will place me there when the time is right. In the mean time I have to wait and listen to what God is saying. I keep looking for him to give, place, and then provide. I have it all backwards. He will provide FIRST, before I even need. Then he will place me there with boundaries and instruction. God wants us to be obedient to his will and TRUST him. Let go of the wheel and let God drive.
I recently wrote in my personal journal that I was afraid. Afraid of many things I’ve been facing in my life. Fear of not knowing where I’m supposed to be in life; fear of what direction my relationship is going; fear of being complacent in my career; and fear of facing my own fears! But God says he has not given us the spirit of fear! He has given us a spirit of love, POWER, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). After expressing my fear in my journal, I realized that I’m also experiencing a sense of calm that I usually don’t feel. Peace that I can’t describe. When everyone else expects me to be moved with anxiety, I’m finding that my feelings are under control. God is showing me that his way is better than my own. I can have peace knowing that before I even realize what I need he’s already provided. Now THAT is grace.
Thank you for joining me in Finding Grace.
Enjoy the journey
